Many may not know (or care) about my aversion and dislike of fish. I think they're creepy. I don't like fish tanks, in general, and find the weird, swimmy little things behind glass to raise my blood pressure more than they lower it.
However, I do like frogs. And today, when Moo and Nonna cleaned the fish tank at the office, I was supplied with a perfect opportunity to purchase two African Dwarf Frogs from The (unfortunately named) Wet Spot fish store in Hollywood. Francis the Puffer Fish lives there. He's creepy, but in a weird uncle sort of way. He floats towards the employees, sensing a voice that brings him snails to crack open. And as Kevin (hereafter known as Kevin the Fish Guy) explained to us, fish don't have more than one emotion. Fish aren't excited to see you, but some may be able to recognize the person who means food!
However, I digress. I was afforded with the field trip opportunity in no small part due to the Kamikaze Neon Tetras (not the breed, kamikaze as in "leapt out of the bowl to their death") who never made it back into the tank. Had those soulful fishies not made their final leap today, I never would have gone to The Wet Spot, and I never would have known that you don't have to empty the entire tank of water in order to clean the fish tank. Go figure. It's like the little tooth on the zipper that keeps your zipper from coming undone, and the revelation that the sheriff's deputy in Dukes of Hazzard was Roscoe P. Coltrane. Not Rosco Pekoe Train. Chalk it up to things that no one ever told me.
At any rate, the visit to the fish store was not anxiety provoking, as Moo was primarily interested in flitting around from tank to tank, looking at cool fish. We finally settled on a pair of Green Cobra Guppys, 3 Oto algae eaters, 4 Black Neon Tetras (to replace the two who met their untimely demise) and the pair of African Dwarf Frogs, who are in my estimation, about the cutest little things who could ever live in a fish tank.
I'm hoping for some baby guppy fish. I'm also hoping for some tadpoles. But I don't think that's going to happen. Looks like I've been cured of my aversion to fish because of frogs, and despite my preference for things that are furry (I'd much rather have pet rats than fish, but it's not in the cards at this time). So indeed, go figure. There will most likely be a home tank in our future as well!
